I have just been involved in the most amazing experience. My Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise, along with a number of other Rotary Clubs in Ventura County California just concluded an event called Project Triumph (Today’s Revolution in Understanding–Make Peace Happen). It makes me very proud.
For the second year in a row, 22 young people, 16 and 17 year olds, from Haifa, Israel came to southern California for two weeks of engagement in peace and reconciliation studies. These teenagers, half Jewish and half Arab (some Muslim, some Christian), come from a city that has known more than its share of strife and violence.
Haifa is a segregated city–part Jewish, part Arab. Some of these Jewish students never met an Arab before. And some of the Arab students never met a Jewish student before. But 8,000 miles from home, they lived and studied and played together, learned from each other and learned about each other. In this new understanding of each other, lives and relationships began to change. It has been a most inspiring event. This gives me hope for the future. As one of the students said: Anything can happen, even peace.
May it be so.
